Fishing with explosives has been explicitly forbidden as a helpful sign informed. There was a large raft of hundreds of American Coot , an American White Pelican and lots of duck species. The bird hovered, plunged and caught a large fish. Our destination: four inland reservoirs and the surrounding scrubland.

Common Nightingales were singing, a squadron of Dalmatian Pelicans was in the air and everything was exactly where it should be, including myself. Brown Pelican Pelecanus occidentalis. Brown Pelicans were always present and regularly dove for fish, as you can see in the above photo. But when you are a pasty white dude from New York relieved to be out of a gray and gloomy winter, you take what you can get and I managed to find some interesting birds in my at the resort.

The next one, the lagoon of Vatatsa (at the eastern side of the Valtos Bay), offered a lot more egrets, one Squacco Heron , two distant Dalmatian Pelicans and quite a few little things chirping from their hiding places in the tamarisk bushes by the road. A few moored boats with piles of fishing nets, but no people.

Masked Lapwings , Straw-necked Ibis , Plumed Whistling-Ducks , Magpie-larks , Cattle Egrets and Australian Pratincoles all gather around and in the drainage channel. All of the nice green vegetation around these drainage channels is very popular with the Cattle Egrets and by November they have some beautiful breeding plumage.

A few Lesser Kestrels by the dyke wall, then a Black-eared Wheatear at some cattle fencing. Several Glossy Ibises , two dozen Gull-billed Terns and Collared Pratincoles , a few Dalmatian Pelicans , Black Terns , Dunlins …. This year, we had about 65 dead pelicans. There are no trails as such, but you can follow in the cattle tracks along the edge of the river or the gravel tracks used by vehicles. Female Black-necked Stork “kneeling” Australian Pelicans feed along the Fitzroy River and are usually in the more tidal area of the river. Australian Pelicans.
