The Brown Pelican and the Peruvian Pelican are closely related and once were considered the same species. They are indeed very similar in all plumage stages, but the Peruvian Pelican is nearly twice as big as its northern counterpart. Brown Pelicans in non-breeding plumage. Taking my usual route along Okaloosa Island’s Beasley Park, I noted Laughing Gulls , Brown Pelicans , a Snowy Plover or two, and the usual packs of Sanderlings. Perhaps the males will grasp a fish in their small bills and bring the morsels back to prospective mates. It’s mid-April, and soon they will begin laying eggs.

Fish and Wildlife Service. Alaska’s long-lining fleet now must have bird-deterrent measures in place, which means a lot more Laysan, Black-footed and Short-tailed Albatross are not being injured or drowned in fishing gear. On a second visit I spotted a fishing boat going east along the channel followed by over a hundred gulls and terns, including over 40 Black Terns. Multitudes, hundreds of Brown Pelicans and Terns–Least, Common, Foster’s, Sandwich, Royal, and Caspian. These were winter birds, due to fly north any day.

The island contains 80,000 breeding Sooty Terns, in addition to 4,500 breeding Brown Noddies and another 100 breeding pairs of the huge Magnificent Frigatebirds, not to mention pelicans, herons, Black Skimmers , other tern species, and so much more.
