China Calls for Tiger Protection

Critter News

India’s newfound partnership with China on environment issues has yielded results in the area of tiger protection as well. In what could be seen as a new year’s gift for the Indian tiger, China’s State Forestry Administration has issued a directive calling for the protection of tigers, especially the need to step up action against illegal trade in tiger parts and products. What kind of protection do they really mean? From the Economic Times (part of the India Times, I think).

Some Good News In NJ Farm Animals Case

Critter News

Thanks to Farmed Animal Net for this information from August 8. In a unanimous decision, New Jersey’s Supreme Court rejected a broad challenge by animal protection advocates to the state’s rules on the care of farmed animals) but struck down regulations that regard husbandry practices as being “humane” merely because they are routine. Department of Agriculture (NJDA) was ordered to readdress a number of its mandated standards for farmed animal treatment.

Farm Animal Welfare Fight Heats Up in Ohio

Critter News

Issue 2 in Ohio would create 13-member state board to oversee the care of farm animals in the State. The Humane Society and other groups oppose it as a power grab by big agriculture to prevent another Proposition 2 (the initiative passed last year in California to improve standards for farm animal care.) If it passes, it will encourage other states' ag industries to go on the offensive to protect their "raw materials.". Tags: ohio farm animal welfare us agribusiness

FDA Recommends Banning Antibiotics from Feed

Critter News

Not the solution or end to factory farming, but if big ag can't rely on antibiotics, then they may have to rethink the filthy conditions of factory farms. Citing research showing that feeding antibiotics to animals on factory farms in order to promote growth "is not in the interest of protecting or promoting public health," the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) is recommending that farmers stop routinely mixing antibiotics into animal feed.

Getting Emotional

Creature Talk

The mama bear was trying to get him back up but she couldn’t and eventually she had to leave him so that she could protect her other cub and herself. That cub probably lived just as long as any pig does on today’s factory farms…and he at least lived his short life FREE. Chickens, turkeys, pigs and other farmed animals get nothing of the sort. Sometimes being an animal rights advocate is emotionally exhausting. Today is one of those days.

Most informative for a discussion about vegan advocacy is the section about the animal rights movement (and unfortunately he alternately calls it “animal protection” and also refers to welfare, perhaps because of the Humane Research Council’s study that people prefer the word “protection”).

Animal Person

By removing these excess products off the market, and placing them into food assistance programs, we will quickly stabilize the prices for these products, allowing the producers to break-even, or perhaps even make a profit on their farms. Yes, concentrated animal feeding operations, or “factory farms” as you call them, are a key feature of modern agriculture. We can thank factory farming for yet another antibiotic-resistant supergerm: Methicillin-Resistant Staphylococcus Aureus (MRSA). Smith studied two large Midwestern hog farms and found ST398, the virulent strain of MRSA, in 45 percent of farmers and 49 percent of hogs. All evidence points to factory farms. Factory farms are concentrated animal feeding operations (CAFOs) where animals are raised intensively and permanently confined in warehouses and sheds.

R. G. Frey on Feeling and Principle

Animal Ethics

An enormous volume of material has already appeared on the conditions under which animals live and die on factory farms, and more is almost certainly on the way. If our liking for meat is in fact more intense than our revulsion at the suffering endured on factory farms, then we are going to remain meat-eaters, with the result that, if the vegetarian has grounded his case in an appeal to our feelings, then that case is in jeopardy.
