Mainland island sanctuaries are popular in New Zealand for any number of reasons. Orokonui Sanctuary’s headquarters and reserve. Interestingly though I have seen this species in a number of reserves across New Zealand it was the first time I had seen them in South Island, their true native home. South Island Takahe.

Sanctuary Lakes, Palmerston

There have been some new developments since we lived here in the late 1990′s and the new housing area in the suburb of Gunn has a lake system called Sanctuary Lakes. There is a path around Sanctuary Lakes and a car-park, but it can easily be reached from all the surrounding area along footpaths. Little Corella roosting.
