The arrival of those migratory species was my motivation for spending a Monday around our church last week. Mexicans call this very common winter bird the Gorrión Arlequín , which could be translated “Clownish (Harlequin) Sparrow” They use the same word, Arlequín , in their common name for the similarly clownish Acorn Woodpecker.

During May migration, European Roller and few dozen strong flocks of Red-footed Falcons were observed on the wires. eBird list of the recorded species. It was gazetted as a nature reserve in 1977. Once a Peregrine Falcon flew above the veranda, while several distant King Vultures were soaring above the valley. Located within its private premontane forest reserve at 3000 ft / 900 m a.s.l. km (Manakin Trail).

This species is rare, hardly ever observed, and severely understudied. EBird, for example, has a total of only 134 observations recorded (5 of them mine), and has only received 9 lists with photos of the species (4 of them mine). It was also a pleasure to get a picture of a Laughing Falcon , although from quite a distance.

On a recent visit I threw my bags in the hotel room and went straight there, and got over 60 species of birds in a few hours and fantastic views of Nilgai , the largest antelope in India. Commoner species include Bar-headed Geese , parakeets, shrikes, mynas and minivets. You should also see Gharial and Mugger Crocodiles there.

Laughing Falcon. Each of the six species in Costa Rica sports beautiful plumage with green and blue hues highlighted with rufous tones, and several also have long, racket-tipped tails. Two of the birds were far more cooperative than I would normally expect from this usually flighty species. Happily, a Merlin soon strafed the area and though it paid no attention to the sparrow, which I imagine it never even noticed, the sparrow noticed the falcon and flushed. Get back into cover before another falcon comes through!

Lately, I have been waking up to the vocal antics of Laughing Falcon , the newly split Gray-cowled Wood-Rail , Grayish Saltator , Melodious Blackbird , and this beautiful male Blue Grosbeak that sings about a block away. Numbers were impressive, especially because that euphonia species isn’t the commonest of birds in Costa Rica.
