And my decision to take this as a learning experience led to some interesting conclusions — and even some pretty cool birds. Instead, I was able to stick close to my car, taking shelter in it when necessary, and still see lots of birds. Black-bellied Plover on the left, collection of Peeps on the right. Which I did.

But for some reason, on a non-spectacular weekday morning I found myself reading a story about how a local shelter was calling for more volunteers to walk pups, as the number needing to be adopted had gone up drastically as during a down economy, many families were forced to leave their animals in the care of shelters.

The practice gained wider publicity after the animal rights group PETA said earlier this month that 1 of its agents spent eight months working undercover at University of Utah research facilities.

Luckily, for birds, I didn’t have to, as a skulky Winter Wren sought shelter right outside my dining room window, adding a highly improbable third wren species to my yard list. That has certainly been my own experience, but I am not the only one who says this; an ever-growing body of evidence confirms this fact. Some scientists suggest that our brains may be hard-wired to relate the color with a place of food, shelter and safety. No people: All right, this one is all my own. Green is good.

What I feel right now is joy at their return. What my previous experience had not prepared me for, was that this summer I would see many of those species for the first time all at once. We are in the middle of our monsoon season, and I had to repeatedly find shelter from brief midday showers.

From spring hole to spring hole we slowly moved, our captain providing running commentary on the number of gallons flowing from Silver Springs, the number of movies that had been shot here, and the wildlife seeking shelter within the cool waters.
