Colt Creek was my 99th Florida State Park. for Florida’s State Parks, Trails, and Historic Sites that hit a crescendo for me when I pulled through the gates of the park. Large picnic pavilions border one side, and while I was there the largest was commandeered by a family party.

One particular family of owls had particularly evaded me. All the local birders had seen them, and though I arrived on the Florida Panhandle too late to observe them when they were young, I fervently wished to see them all grown up. Almost the entire family had us surrounded. More hoots and squeals echoed through the air.

He was adopted by the Masson family and was apparently the most loving dog all who met him had ever had the pleasure of being licked by. My experience says otherwise (particularly with my childhood kitty, Brady), but generally speaking Masson's depiction of cats is accurate. There's never a claw in sight and she's very patient).

I started the year in Florida, traveled to India with the ABA in February, combined family and birding in an August trip to California, and in-between saw very good birds in New York and New Jersey. There is no experience comparable to birding a dump, and, I have to say, I have never experienced a dump like this one.

I know from experience how accessible Dennis is, last year he helped me identify a damselfly I photographed in Costa Rica (Argia anceps, no common name). Here is an example: I think I saw a Red-tailed Pennant, Brachymesia Furcata, two weeks ago in the Florida Keys; that’s my photo above. Within families, species are organized by genus.

It was a heart-pounding scene straight out of Jurassic Park, an odd experience for a laid-back pursuit like birding. Southern Cassowary with chicks by Duncan Wright Carlos Sanchez was particularly appreciative of a new bird for him in Florida. This bird represented only the second documented record of this species in Florida.

After a brief look at a map, my rough guesstimate is that the territory from Guatemala and Belize south to the Darien gap is roughly equal to New England, or Florida and the eastern parts of Georgia and the Carolinas north to the Virginia line. Fewer tanagers : Many more member of this technicolor family occur in Costa Rica.
