The Large-billed Crow ( video ) is one of the natural enemies – in the study above, it predated 19 eggs from four pitta nests. Different from many other parasitic cuckoos, the chick typically does not kill all its nest mates, though one or two of them may die from starvation. I hope he is right.

Fortunately for the buntings, they seem to detect most cuckoo eggs smuggled in (75% in one study). A study found that for Plain Prinia , egg characteristics in a mainland China location with many cuckoos make it much easier to spot cuckoo eggs than in a Taiwan location with few cuckoos ( source ). I have written about the interesting sex life of these jacanas a few times already (short version: female mates with male, lays a bunch of eggs for him to incubate and raise the chicks, leaves him, finds another male, repeat). Apparently, after a male first mates with a female, he throws out the first one or two eggs she lays in their nest.
