Quote of the Week

Critter News

"Animals and humans suffer and die alike. If you had to kill your own calf before you ate it, most likely you would not be able to do it. To hear the calf scream, to see the blood spill, to see the baby being taken away from its momma, and to see the look of death in the animal's eye would turn your stomach. So you get the man at the packing house to do the killing for you.

The Happy Act

4 The Love Of Animals

I wanted to share this email I received recently from the ASPCA. It concerns the Happy Act, which would be a great benefit for pet owners. Dear Animal Advocates, Introduced by Rep. Thaddeus McCotter, H.R. 3501—known as the Humanity and Pets Partnered Through the Years (“HAPPY”) Act—is a federal bill that would reward responsible pet parents by allowing them to keep more money in their pockets come tax time.

On "The Age of Stupid"

Animal Person

Did you ever wonder why people become subjects in a documentary when they know that they're going to look like fools? Or maybe they don't know that, and that's why they participate. Either way, there are many cringe-worthy moments in " The Age of Stupid ," which is sort of "An Inconvenient Truth About Oil, with a Particular Focus on Air Travel." I liked the way the film connects oil use to an oil company.

Moral Vegetarianism, Part 11 of 13

Animal Ethics

For an explanation of this feature, click on “Moral Vegetarianism” at the bottom of this post. The Argument from Human Grain Shortage All of the clearly moral arguments for vegetarianism given so far have been in terms of animal rights and suffering. New moral vegetarianism, however, rests on moral arguments couched in terms of human welfare. It is argued that beef cattle and hogs are protein factories in reserve.

PETA Uncovers Horrible Conditions at Land O'Lakes Supplier

Critter News

Not a pretty picture. From PETA's site: A new PETA undercover investigation inside a Land O'Lakes supplier facility in Pennsylvania has revealed routine neglect and cruelty to cows who are milked for the Fortune 250 company's products. Over the course of several months, the investigation documented deplorable, filthy conditions for cows on the farm, such as pens that were filled with deep excrement (see video and photos), and cows who suffered from ailments and conditions so severe that they col

European Money Goes to Alternative Testing Research

Critter News

Why is it so damn difficult to get the same kind of interest from the US government? I have yet to read anything official in which there is even an interest of getting away from these barbaric practices. We're not even talking drugs or medical treatment here, we're talking stupid cosmetics. It's disheartening. From the University World News. A substantial fund of EUR50 million (US$74 million) is being offered to European research teams to develop alternatives to animal testing for cosmetics and

Therapy Dog Helps Boy

4 The Love Of Animals

This is a great story about how a therapy dog helped a boy overcome depression. Dogs, as well as other pets, have been shown to improve quality of life. A young student no one could reach…that is, no person. By Lori Shaw, Farwell, MIchigan. My yellow lab, Alex, a certified therapy dog, tugged at her leash and trotted down the elementary school hallway, eager to get to the kids we’d been visiting the past couple months.

Animal Activists Continue Attacks on Max Mara

Critter News

A bomb threat was called into a Max Mara in Madrid. This comes weeks after an explosion in Mexico at a Max Mara shop there. Max Mara sells furs. From Biteback: "On Wednesday Max Mara Madrid received an anonymous call that claimed that an explosive device had been placed in the shop. The warning was false, but an action as simple and with so few risks can disrupt the normal operation of a business, causing them to lose money and creating a climate of suspicion.

1045 Animals Seized in Houston

Critter News

The SPCA took 1045 animals out of a home in Texas that were living in horrible conditions. When SPCA investigators received an anonymous tip Wednesday afternoon about animals in need of medical care at a home in northwest Houston, they had no idea it would turn into one of the largest U.S. animal seizures in memory. "At that time, we didn't know how many animals were on the property," said Charles Jantzen, chief investigator for the Houston Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals.

Why Top Chef Makes Me So Mad

Russians Introducing Leopards Back to Caucusus

Critter News

Russian Prime Minister Vladimir Putin was on hand when two leopards were released into the Caucasus. While I think the gesture is nice, it appears to be more of a publicity stunt to head off environmental criticism of the 2014 Olympic Games construction. "We are standing here and admiring your animals. Glorious animals, very beautiful," Putin, surrounded by International Olympic Committee members, told Berdymukhamedov by telephone as he stood by the cage in the Sochi national park.

On Being Vegan "Friendly"

The Factual table I posted yesterday annoyed me a bit, and here's why: the categories "vegan," "vegetarian," and "vegan-friendly." Vegan: Got it. I can order anything on the menu without having to ask any questions. Vegetarian : At least it doesn't say "vegetarian-friendly," as Ruths Chris Steakhouse is vegetarian-friendly in that you can probably get a baked potato with butter and sour cream, sauteed vegetables drizzled with cheese, and a salad with Ranch dressing at every one of them.
