"Animals and humans suffer and die alike. If you had to kill your own calf before you ate it, most likely you would not be able to do it. To hear the calf scream, to see the blood spill, to see the baby being taken away from its momma, and to see the look of death in the animal's eye would turn your stomach. I wanted to share this email I received recently from the ASPCA. It concerns the Happy Act, which would be a great benefit for pet owners. Dear Animal Advocates, Introduced by Rep. Thaddeus McCotter, H.R. 3501—known as the Humanity and Pets Partnered Through the Years (“HAPPY”) Act—is a federal bill that would reward responsible pet parents by allowing them to keep more money in their pockets come tax time.

Did you ever wonder why people become subjects in a documentary when they know that they're going to look like fools? Or maybe they don't know that, and that's why they participate. Either way, there are many cringe-worthy moments in " The Age of Stupid ," which is sort of "An Inconvenient Truth About Oil, with a Particular Focus on Air Travel." I liked the way the film connects oil use to an oil company.

This is a great story about how a therapy dog helped a boy overcome depression. Dogs, as well as other pets, have been shown to improve quality of life. The RSPCA are trying to raise awareness of its urgent campaign to protect the welfare of UK meat chickens. Right now, the UK government is considering new EU legislation that may increase the number of chickens allowed in rearing sheds. Even at current minimum standards, each bird is given less space than a sheet of paper. It’s hard to walk or even flap their wings.

Busch Gardens welcomed a baby bongo to the park Sept. 13. Bongo are native to the rain forests of Africa. Busch Gardens cares for the endangered Eastern Mountain subspecies of bongo. Their bright chestnut color becomes darker with age, and their body is highlighted with white stripes. The gestation period for this species is 9 to 9 ½ months. Amber and her calf will join the Serengeti Plain in a few months after having some time to bond.

A bomb threat was called into a Max Mara in Madrid. This comes weeks after an explosion in Mexico at a Max Mara shop there. Max Mara sells furs. From Biteback: "On Wednesday Max Mara Madrid received an anonymous call that claimed that an explosive device had been placed in the shop. The warning was false, but an action as simple and with so few risks can disrupt the normal operation of a business, causing them to lose money and creating a climate of suspicion.

I first read about Rescue Ink in Best Friends Magazine. They are a group of big tattoed guys that go around rescuing animals. Now they have their own show on National Geographic Channel. The SPCA took 1045 animals out of a home in Texas that were living in horrible conditions. When SPCA investigators received an anonymous tip Wednesday afternoon about animals in need of medical care at a home in northwest Houston, they had no idea it would turn into one of the largest U.S. animal seizures in memory. "At that time, we didn't know how many animals were on the property," said Charles Jantzen, chief investigator for the Houston Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals.

The Animal Legal Defense Fund provided $3500.00 to investigate the abuse of over 100 dogs by an animal hoarder in Michigan. From the ALDF site: Dearborn, Mich.– Wayne County Prosecutor Kym Worthy announced today that Dearborn dog hoarder Kenneth Lang Jr is being charged with two counts of cruelty to 10 or more animals, after more than 100 live and approximately 150 dead Chihuahuas and Chihuahua mixes were removed from the filthy home this past July.

I'm just watching the fourth or fifth episode of the latest season of Top Chef. It just irritates the hell out of me. First of all, it highlights the deficiencies of today's chefs' training. Throughout the entire show, the judges and contestants always refer to their meats as the "protein." It's as though there is no other protein around. That's not true.

About a year ago I posted information about the launch of a new stem cell therapy for dogs ( Vet-Stem ). This therapy uses adult stem cells to help injured dogs and dogs suffering from arthritis. I am happy to bring you an update about the company, as the treatment is very promising for our dog companions! Since the launch Vet-Stem has treated more that 1800 dogs and more than 5,000 animals total.

They have been pretty frustrated with China, who really doesn't give a rip about tigers.unless they can raise them on farms for "medicinal" harvest and other capitalist pursuits. He was caught at an airport with about 70 live animals, including at least three different endangered species and eight inch-long Caiman crocodiles. The article says most are okay , but in varying stages of health. I don't know how these poor animals survive stuffed in luggage. Very cruel. Russian Prime Minister Vladimir Putin was on hand when two leopards were released into the Caucasus. While I think the gesture is nice, it appears to be more of a publicity stunt to head off environmental criticism of the 2014 Olympic Games construction. Glorious animals, very beautiful," Putin, surrounded by International Olympic Committee members, told Berdymukhamedov by telephone as he stood by the cage in the Sochi national park.

I don't know if this guy working in an animal lab has anything to do with the crime he is accused of committing. But, if he's guilty of such a horrible and violent crime, it makes me wonder how he treated his animal subjects when no one was around. I guess we'll see what happens next. It may not be poaching this time though. A tiger was found dead outside the Kohra forest range of Kaziranga on Saturday, sparking suspicions of revenge killing by angry residents of adjoining villages. With this, the big cat death toll in the national park rose to three this year. The carcass was spotted beyond the park boundary, near an upcoming resort in the Mohpara area.

The Factual table I posted yesterday annoyed me a bit, and here's why: the categories "vegan," "vegetarian," and "vegan-friendly." Vegan: Got it. I can order anything on the menu without having to ask any questions. Vegetarian : At least it doesn't say "vegetarian-friendly," as Ruths Chris Steakhouse is vegetarian-friendly in that you can probably get a baked potato with butter and sour cream, sauteed vegetables drizzled with cheese, and a salad with Ranch dressing at every one of them.

Saturdays are WILD on the National Geographic Channel. This week’s episode, which airs Saturday, September 19 at 8PM ET/PT, will explore the mangroves.
