eBird Weather: RainCrow Q&A

10,000 Birds

I routinely review recent eBird checklists for several of my local patches and recently noticed a few with weather information ( e.g. , temperature, wind, cloud cover, humidity, etc.) from something called RainCrow.

Saw a racoon the other day

Reddit Animals

The other night I heard a bang and wasn't quite sure what it was so I was going to check it out. I turned on the light for outside and peeked out the window to find a racoon staring back at me and our green bin was tipped over onto our step. If I had made any noise he probably would've bolted but since I only turned on the light and was just looking at him he kept looking back and was even brave enough to keep digging into the bin.

Factors to consider when selecting a robin

10,000 Birds

Picking the right robin that fits your needs can be confusing and stressful. The task is not made easier by some birds that are robins in name only, such as the American Robin, a typical RINO (robin in name only). A RINO. For those serious about robins, the choice will most likely come down to either the European Robin or the Japanese Robin. In this post, I will tell you what to keep in mind when you choose between one of these two robins.

Highlights from the 2022 Arenal Christmas Count in Costa Rica

10,000 Birds

December is not the ideal month for bird counts, at least not in Costa Rica. Yes, we do have warm, tropical weather and a fancy assortment of resident and wintering species. Nor is there any trudging through snow in search of extra hardy species or visits to feeders with the hope of finding a grackle or Red-winged Blackbird that failed to fly south.

CBC in Paradise

10,000 Birds

It is undoubtedly the most wonderful time of year – when we don our binoculars and boots and head off on a tradition spanning more than a hundred years – that of the Christmas Bird Count! I’ve been leading a small but faithful group on Trinidad for several years to count birds within a livestock farm that is generally restricted to the public (you can read about some of those shenanigans here ); this was the first time I was to embark on a CBC on the smaller island of Tobago.

Rancho Naturalista Lodge, Costa Rica, or in the Land of Coffee and Chocolate

10,000 Birds

On that glorious day, I observed ten critically endangered birds, representing 8% of their Costa Rican, or 2% of their global population!! But, let’s start at the beginning. In my previous post , I dealt with Rancho Naturalista Lodge itself and birding within their private reserve. Now, I’ll move away from it, visiting nearby lakes and rivers with Rancho in-house guides Mercedes and Harry, and our driver Daniel behind the wheel of the mighty Isuzu D-Max.

Another Look

10,000 Birds

After countless drives in the dead of night, scouring powerlines and treetops in the darkness for any sight of one of Tobago’s best kept secrets, we were finally rewarded a few weeks ago. It wasn’t an expected sighting by any means, due in no small part to a history of disappointment. We had been hanging out – or as we say here, liming – with some friends at the remote northeastern tip of the island and began the 90 minute journey back to our (temporary) base long after d

The Wonderfulness of Local Field Guides: Reviews of ABA Field Guide to Birds of Maine & Birding Guide to the Greater Pasadena Area

10,000 Birds

At the end of 2022, let us celebrate the local field guide, a sub-genre that many of us feared would die, the victim of technology, development, and globalization, but which still shines bright, fewer in number but brilliant in quality, thanks to birders and birding organizations that believe in knowing your patch and your state. Birding Shanghai in December 2022

10,000 Birds

This year, it seems I wrote one post on birding in Shanghai each month – and I am still not even sure anyone is interested in these. Maybe the topic is too bureaucratic or irrelevant? Comments are welcome. Probably the most interesting bird this month was a Grey-headed Canary-Flycatcher showing up in the Shanghai Botanical Garden. This bird is not rare at all further down south, but one would not expect it in Shanghai in mid-December.

How Many Hummers?

10,000 Birds

Our relatively-recent trip to Spain and the Middle East was, as expected, a great opportunity to see new birds. In the end, it gave me 44 lifers: 10 from Turkey and 8 from Jordan, which I had not visited before, and 26 from Spain, which I had visited previously, but in which we spent much more time. Still, there were notable groups of birds which I could not see in the Old World.

Birding the Ndumo area, South Africa

10,000 Birds

Ndumo Game Reserve lies in the Easternmost part of South Africa, close to the border of Mozambique and Eswatini. It is not particularly big but has a reported 430 bird species including migrants, though during my short stay it seems I missed most of the key attractions among them. Pel’s Fishing Owl, where were you? The Black Heron – besides looking rather cool, though not really very black – also has an interesting fishing technique.

Australian Magpies breeding in Broome

10,000 Birds

Australian Magpies are not a common sight in Broome. There appears to be a pair that reside between the Broome Senior High School and the Boulevarde Shopping Centre and we have observed them in that area since we moved here in 1999. We have occasionally observed one near Gantheaume Point , but this may well be one of these Australian Magpies , because nowhere is far in Broome.

Audubon’s Footsteps

10,000 Birds

Denis Clavreul, artist, biologist, and Frenchman, got it into his head to follow the same paths blazed, in the first part of the nineteenth century, by John James Audubon, also an artist and also a Frenchman (born in Haiti) — though not much of a biologist or naturalist. The result is this large and handsome book, an homage, In the Footsteps of Audubon, with exquisite watercolors and entertaining and evocative writing. .

Broome’s Poinciana trees

10,000 Birds

Poinciana trees are not native to Australia, but they grow very well in the north and are often found in local parks. Most people are familiar with their bright red colours and their long seed pods, but what is worth noting is that birds like them too! There are several Poinciana trees in Cygnet Park in Broome and the nearby roundabouts and street verges.

Year Birding in Costa Rica- Coming Into the 2022 Home Stretch

10,000 Birds

December birding in Costa Rica is a time of transition. Finally, the rains seem to have gone, at least on the Pacific slope and around the urban asphalt ways of the Central Valley. They get replaced by sun and a bit of wind; ironically, not the best situation for birding but still better than blinding, heavy rains. Now, we can head out birding again, now, the end of the year is suddenly nigh…we have to go out birding!

Entrance Point, Broome

10,000 Birds

Last Sunday, 27th November, we went to the Port of Broome to see what birds were about after a few days of teasing weather. There has been very little rain in Broome itself so far, but plenty of rain has fallen out of town and especially to the north. The main highway was closed for several days when the Fitzroy River at Fitzroy Crossing peaked at 11.3 metres, which was a rise of over 9 metres over 5 days.
