Another vagrant that has been hanging out in Costa Rica, an individual of this duck species from either Peru or the Galapagos has been living at the shorebird hotspot of Punta Morales for more than a month. On our fateful day, this rare vagrant for Costa Rica perched on a nearby ferry for wonderful views. White-cheeked Pintail !

After Lake Titicaca, Lake Junin is the second largest and the highest large lake in Peru. Located at an altitude of 4078 m Lake Junin draws water from an approximately 1800 km2 catchment area of the puna zone of Junin Province in central Peru. There is a rich assortment of Andean ducks, coots, and other waterfowl.

So I lowered my threshold to 500 and that worked well… for Costa Rica and South America, that is (especially Peru). These 430 km2 / 170 mi2 along the river Brahmaputra are known for more than 500 bird species, of which 450 were eBirded so far, threatened Baer’s Pochard , Bengal Florican , Falcated Duck and the Black-necked Stork among them.

It is a well-named duck, as the male does have a red head. Of course, other ducks have red heads too but for whatever reason Aythya americana got the name and now has to live up to it with unlimited sex appeal. Save that for the duck butts. Ducks and geese certainly make up the bulk of the observations. I just got my report off to PASP, so I really don’t know a whole lot about my bird yet, but I do know that it is bird #055, and that its new “Bird Bling” was added in either Bolivia, Ecuador or Peru! as well in my photographs.

Also, with the opening of more hunting seasons i am hopefull that more concerned sportsmen will start an organization along the same grain as Ducks Unlimited to protect and create Sandhill habitat. You don’t even have to have a duck stamp! From July 1 2008-June 30 2009 Ducks Unlimited raised 200.4 Isn’t that neat?
