Barnacle Geese even made it to “agricultural pest” status. In the book, one picture stood out in particular: the White-headed Duck. There were only a few dozen of these ducks left and the photographer – using old-fashioned analog film – took just one, very fuzzy shot. There will be large eucalypts and a canal on your right.

Horrible Hybrids

On BirdTrack, the British equivalent of e-Bird, the list of birds provided does allow for Tufted Duck x Ferruginous Duck to be recorded, but not Tufted Duck x Pochard. However, that’s exactly what I guessed the duck swimming in front of me had to be. My hunch was Tufted Duck x Pochard.

However – and I am not saying this out of misplaced national pride – there is one bird in the Netherlands that proves Jefferson wrong and Buffon right: the White-tailed Eagle (or Sea Eagle ). So yes, I needed to see this beast, this flying door, this scourge of all things’ geese, this modern Roc. It’s the only Dutch eagle.

Birds on the move after sunset The numbers of Glossy Ibis continue to increase right beside the highway and they have no doubt bred in the area over recent months. Australasian Swamphens beside the highway The numbers of Magpie Geese have also continued to grow every week and there have been plenty right beside the highway.

This will change over time of course and once it rains again you would need to consider if you had the right vehicle to access the area. Dragonflies photobombing on the right as we approach. You have to look carefully, because often there are Australasian Grebes and Green Pygmy-Geese amongst the ducks and lilies.

I might have to add the Dallas airport staff to the list of things Buffon was right about. Late summer 2023 the lakes and ponds had been empty, presumably because the ducks and geese were moulting. Empty no more, the ponds were now brimming with ducks of all creeds and persuasions – it was spectacular.
