Reading Deb's post about the goslings at Poplar and getting Jenny 's request to sign a petition to save the Canada geese of Ballwin, Missouri from mass extermination reminded me how much I miss the wildlife at the neighborhood we lived in from 2002-early 2005. Although Tawny Frogmouths are well camouflaged I did notice the shape of the tree was not quite right and there they were. The Cape Barren Geese had goslings when I visited. Chestnut Teal and Hardheads were the predominant ducks and there were several Masked Lapwings amongst them.

The shallows at its lower end are full of Tufted Ducks (500) and Common Pochards (350), Great Cormorants (50), all of them dissolving in the mist hanging low over water and hiding further rafts. A few dozen Common Goldeneyes and several Smews are among them but it takes a scope to locate these diminutive ducks.

Marlgu Billabong looking right from the shelter. There were numerous Magpie Geese and Wandering Whistling-Ducks on the bank with Yellow Chats running among them to drink. Well, it took about ten minutes to find out, as I was sitting in the RV, right at water’s edge, photographing a lovely pair of Rufus-banded Honeyeaters , when a small, 2-meter-long Crocodile came rushing up out of the water, right at my door! Palmerston lies to the south east and Darwin to the north west and there is a bicycle path almost right to the reserve. There are no longer any Green Pygmy-geese , but there are over one thousand Magpie Geese. In fact there are so many Magpie Geese it does make it hard to establish what else is present. Magpie Geese.

A month ago I was in the Iron Gates National Park in eastern Serbia, where one Black Woodpecker flew across the road, right in front of us (proving it is an extant taxon). Birds here included geese, Greater White-fronted and Greylags and, among 25,000 of these, four rare and stunningly handsome Red-breasted Geese.

Plumed Whistling Ducks and Wandering Whistling Ducks have been nesting in these wet areas and our first pair of Green Pygmy-geese for 2017 were floating around on the track! As we walked from the car park to the bird hide we noticed a family of Magpie Geese on the edge of the billabong. Family of Magpie Geese. Another nice find right outside the centre was a Emu, although it was so tame it can hardly be called a find. The centre had a massive balcony that overlooked a large reedy and lilypad strewn lake, which was home to fantastic birds like Comb-crested Jacanas and Green Pygmy Geese , birds so small you’d think they were small ducks.
