Not another person for miles, and a pair of friendly, well, almost, Great Horned Owls living in the tree right above us. Now that is a first.

Two full days at Hart Mountain Wildlife Refuge, three days at Dog Lake, and a short visit to Upper Cottonwood Lake brought back many great memories, in addition to a nice list of birds. Then, to finish the week, we visited the famous, and not necessarily for all the right reasons, Malhuer Wildlife Refuge.

The reservoir offered Tufted Ducks , Eurasian Wigeon , Gadwall , Northern Shoveler , Common Pochard , Eurasian Teal , Eurasian Coots , Great Crested Grebes , Little Grebes , Canada Geese and Greylag Geese. The nature reserve is really well managed by the Yorkshire Wildlife Trust with numerous hides and wheelchair access to much of the reserve. The nature reserve is constantly evolving and although part of it is a former sand quarry it has been carefully developed to encourage wildlife. Greylag Geese in front of Wild Bird Cafe.

We were able to find a very nice RV park, just a couple of miles from one of my all time favourite birding hotspots, Billy Frank Jr, Nisqually National Wildlife Refuge. In the winter this place is alive with thousand of ducks and geese. Today, I saw a handful of Mallards , two Common Mergansers, and a Wood Duck Family.

Alkborough Flats were only formed in 2006 when the River Humber burst its banks and flooded 450 hectares of farmland and it is now a haven for wildlife. Greylag Geese on the move. Many visitors appear to do the short walks, so you can enjoy the area mostly alone other than the wildlife. Although Tawny Frogmouths are well camouflaged I did notice the shape of the tree was not quite right and there they were. The Cape Barren Geese had goslings when I visited. The sanctuary is open from 8am-4pm daily.

I might have to add the Dallas airport staff to the list of things Buffon was right about. Late summer 2023 the lakes and ponds had been empty, presumably because the ducks and geese were moulting. Empty no more, the ponds were now brimming with ducks of all creeds and persuasions – it was spectacular.

It was a destination I had never experienced so I made a few phone calls and got some information from the California Department of Fish and Wildlife agent who actually runs both the Butte Valley and the Shasta Valley Wildlife Areas, which are about 25 miles apart.

The skies were full of thousands of Greylag Geese , Pink-footed Geese , Barnacle Geese and Brent Geese on the move and in the shallow water there were already hundreds of Bar-tailed Godwits , Eurasian Oystercatchers , Dunlin and Eurasian Curlew. The first surprise came, as we were driving into town, and not one, but two Scissor-tailed Flycatchers flew right across the road in front of us. This Coopers Hawk flew right up to the roof on a flood control booth, and looked at me like “ What are you doing out here” and promptly flew away. This one flew right over my head.
