My Eastern Sibley served me well, replacing the Peterson’s with which I learned my ducks and waders. I was a little sad to see that the newer editions don’t have the second signature birds (Wood Duck for Eastern, Tufted Puffin for Western) and regional maps on the spine. This means that loons are no longer first!

The source of this ranking, BirdLife International, lists Bolivia as currently having 1,439 bird species, including 18 breeding endemics. Knowing that there are reserves with long lists of 600 or more species, I set my threshold at more than 600 birds… and found only a few such hotspots. We had observed 40 bird species by the time we reached Katherine and then Grant had some work calls and emails to deal with. There is an isolated population of this species in the Katherine area and they were bouncing around a park in town. Plumed Whistling-Ducks and Magpie Geese. Brown Goshawk. Black-winged stilt.

Arriving at Bilyuin Pool the first time in May we were soon greeted by a family of Australian Magpies keen to see if we were prepared to hand over anything-NO! Australian Magpie family. The Australian Wood Duck left later that day and were not seen again! Australian Wood Ducks , Grey Teal and Australian Grebes.

On my last visit, which lastes four days, I didn’t have much time to sneak away from family, but I did get to check out two new sites. There is a water trough for the dairy cows, but sometimes the Pacific Black Ducks take advantage of the trough! Pacific Black Ducks. I always approach the bridge slowly to see what bird species are below and around the area. There is a family of feral foxes that I often encounter near Bennison Creek. Tiger Snake.

The reason the location is remaining undisclosed is that reliable Mangrove Cuckoos are difficult to find in the American Birding Association area and are a very sought after species. As you first walk down the paths (or even park) the dominant species is not a bird but Eastern Grey Kangaroos, and lots of them. It wasn’t long before I saw my first family of Superb Fairy-wrens as well as a very noisy Willie Wagtail. First was a family of fast-moving Silvereyes and a Spotted Pardalote.

The tricky thing for me is that Royal NP is in the south of Sydney, and my family lives in the north of the city. Not every huge white bird was a parrot though, and the lake also had a Great Egret among the Australian Grebes , Eurasian Coots and Dusky Moorhens. Less pleasing were the ducks. But I did see a host of little birds.

As we wandered along the trail we soon encountered family groups of both White-winged Fairywrens and Variegated Fairywrens. There was evidence of the mussels that would be a source of food for many species in the receding water line. Orange Chat. There were also Australian Pratincoles on the dry scrub around the middle of the day.

When visiting Sydney I have in the past tended to visit birding sites near the coast and centre, by virtue of that being where my family is. I pulled over, as this was only the third time I have seen this species, and found a few Australian White Ibis among them, along with Purple Swamphens.
