My family took our annual post-Easter Egg hunt hike at Powder Mills Park, where I spied several gorgeous matched pairs of Wood Ducks along with lots of different woodpecker species. Terns, gulls, pelicans, gannets, and ducks all made their way past and all were digiscoped to within an inch of their lives. Whether they were carrying prey, actively hunting, or just flying past I didn’t pass up the opportunity to click away with my Swarovski digiscoping rig and I ended up with some fun shots as a result.

After that experience, I stopped complaining about their hides, realising that they are as good as they ever will be. And that is why the hides are where they are, not to admire the scenery (or shoot at it – hunting is prohibited in the reserve and the ban is enforced). I was far away from the duck but you can still see that it is bleeding heavily. With the duck dead in the water the falcon would alternate between perching on the causeway while watching the duck and occasionally flying over it for an apparent closer look. Here she is making one of her very low passes over the duck.

Now and then individual catfish of various species hunt nearer the surface and larger catfish such as the American Channel Cat will take a duck or other water bird. So, the modal catfish is a fish that hunts from below, can take large prey, and occasionally eats a bird. Pigeons that moved were sitting ducks. 0050840.

Ditto for the feral Muscovy Ducks , though they are a bit less nice. The most likely bird would be Fulvous Whistling-Duck which I tried for and dipped on last year thanks to the refuge that was good for them being closed for hunting on the day that I made the attempt. At least I got Black Rail , even if it was heard-only.

Anyway, the story is not quite how I remembered it, to be honest, but fitting enough to describe the almost claustrophobic birding experience in ever-shrinking Nanhui. Sadly, the numbers of Falcated Duck are similarly declining – it is thus listed as Near Threatened. And it does not even live in reeds.

The Little Egret walks in front of her, a dozen Lesser Whistling Ducks flies noisily low above water and through a flooded grass wades one Black-winged Stilt. Bang Pra is a reservoir and no-hunting area to the south east of Bangkok. Lesser Whistling Duck were flying around, and a Black-naped Oriole provided a nice flash of colour. Bright and early on the morning (actually, so early it wasn’t remotely bright) he was at my hotel, and we were off to our first location, Bang Pra.

On my first visit to the island a few years ago I even found one hunting for sandhoppers and other assorted treats in the washed up seaweed on the beach. Unfortunately, this morph is the dominant one at Fuzhou NFP”) that somehow survived the review process, possibly because the reviewer has had similar experiences. I’d like a beer too, please, as I have never seen a Masked Duck. Scientists now hypothesize that there are two morphs of this owlet, one of which is invisible.

Thankfully it did not last long and then brought some surprising birding opportunities that we normally only experience in our Wet Season. The fence-lines were also good roost sites for the many Whiskered Terns and the majority of the ducks in the deeper water were Pacific Black Ducks and Hard Heads. Brown Falcon.
