Le Conte’s Sparrow at Edgemere Landfill, Queens

Already I had dodged the pack of wild dogs (seriously), spotted a flock of American Pipits , sorted through a huge flock of Snow Geese , and flushed four Eastern Meadowlarks and a Wilson’s Snipe. Then, while walking along a phragmite-lined ditch, a small sparrow flushed, flew a few feet, and dropped back down.

Right, unless you are a stranger attacked by a male conspecific. For example, eBird says that “adults [are] overall pale grayish with black cap and back” Then again, it is called Black-crowned, so the color must be black, right? The scientific species name venustulus means lovely, charming. Fortunately not Donald Trump.

Unfortunately, the Cañada’s ease of access also makes it accessible to many other people, who use it to jog, walk their dogs, and ride mountain bikes. My son and I still remember seeing our first Silky-Flycatchers , right here in the Cañada. This time, they seemed to be everywhere. relatives, are highly social birds.

Birds Worth The Trip

The Cerro de Punhuato (poon-WA-toe) nature reserve, officially denominated a biological garden, is right on the northeastern edge of Morelia’s urban zone. A hand-painted sign told not to enter with a dog. Entry with your pet is forbidden: no dogs; they scare wildlife. It was really very early. This one was an exception.

It’s when Orange-crowned Warblers share the Goldenrod with lisping and chirping sparrows, when hardy Yellow-rumped Warblers dominate the Parulid scene. In Costa Rica, a lot of those birds fly right overhead.
