Back in the old place, there were more birds in the nearby coffee farm but it wasn’t easy to bird because I couldn’t see it from my door and there were stray dogs. Right at home. The bird we hope most to see is the endemic Cabanis’s Ground-Sparrow although Mary wants to see a Barn Owl just as much.

I wandered around a large field as the sun crept onto the grasses and saw a bunch of sparrows. White-throateds of course, but also Song , Field , Dark-eyed Juncos , Eastern Towhees , and a couple Chipping Sparrows. There are more Field Sparrows than one can possibly need to see. This place immediately felt right.

Two full days at Hart Mountain Wildlife Refuge, three days at Dog Lake, and a short visit to Upper Cottonwood Lake brought back many great memories, in addition to a nice list of birds. Then, to finish the week, we visited the famous, and not necessarily for all the right reasons, Malhuer Wildlife Refuge. The bunny got away.

As it turns out, a useful tool for the amateur phenologist is a dog. Dogs LOVE routine, they love walking the same routes and looking at the same vistas and sniffing the same trees day after day at the same time without fail (if you fail, they will let you know.) A pair of Bald Eagles scopes out the Clark Fork for likely snags.

None of my neighbors have cats and I'm only aware of one dog owner blocks away. Ocassional robins, sparrows, crows. I spend a great deal of time outside sitting near where the car is parked, at all hours from early morning, day, overnight, depending on my fluctuating work schedule. or even this city for that matter.

Hopping almost right next to me, I later identified it as the Boat-tailed Grackle ! Their wedding, which was beautiful, was held right on the beach. Down the beach it continued to make its way past other people and even dogs, though I hope for its sake it eventually took wing – it was a very long line of hotels. Great Egret.
