In my opinion dogs would be the first to go. Although I love dogs they're too dependent on humans, it's true that stray/feral dogs can form packs and survive in the wild a regular dog like a golden retriever would get eaten by a lion instantly. Cats would be the next. The main strategy for horses is organisation.

Oh, the joys of urban birding… Add half a dozen Ferruginous Ducks (cover photo), two Whiskered and 40 Black Terns to the previous picture, plus an eagle, an immature White-tailed Eagle. When parking, watch out for one or two local dogs that sleep in the parking lot. That odd bird high overhead could end up being an Ornate Hawk-Eagle. Lesser White-fronted Goose and Greater Spotted Eagle came to mind, but what else? Two kilometre above us, Mount Belles was snow-capped and some two-thirds up the slopes, the thin white cloud sliced up the mountain like a razor in Buñuel’s “An Andalusian Dog”. I am right, Kostas confirms, it is a Greater Spotted Eagle.

Xena is a Eurasian Eagle Owl. When Lisa put her out in their screened-in porch, Xena would barrel through the dog door and head for the bathroom. Spotted Eagle Owls are one of several owls that can be seen here. As well as birds, the reserve holds endangered species like African Wild Dogs. Red-crested Korhaans are attractive members of the bustard family. Brown-hooded Kingfishers hunt far from water. Crested Barbets come in close. Baobab trees are perfect for sundowners.

In a recent case involving my own facility, an immature bald eagle was hit by a car. People passed the eagle often. It is hard to be apathetic when you see for yourself a majestic eagle dying of lead poisoning from the fragments of a lead bullet or lead sinker, both still in use today.

A flock of small birds at the dyke, Yellowhammers mostly… I cannot see well because of one enthusiastic hunting dog which takes pleasure in running through the snow and flushing them up whenever the birds land. On our second visit, Kris’ eagle eye spotted one on the far side of the Dell. Not far from the Dell, a faithful dog sleeps, hoping to meet his person in Heaven. The park did have a pack of African Wild Dogs, or Painted Wolves, the species I had gone to Africa to see. Out in the park treats like Black-breasted Snake-eagles , Lemon-breasted Canaries, African Cuckoo-hawks, Pink Twinspots, Southern Black T**s, Martial Eagles and Black-bellied Bustards were a small selection of the treats I saw.
