We were happy to experience three birds of prey on this jaunt. A Roadside Hawk perched on a post next to, of course, a road. Happily, one of the Seminary students is also a birder, and he walked the grounds with me on my second evening here. And two Ferruginous Pygmy-Owls toot-toot-tooted from the brush.

It is my opinion from personal experience that there is really no point in buying the BTX without the extender. The BTX system stored in the Swarovski BP 30 backpack together with the PTH tripod head Secondly, it is very heavy and cumbersome which is to be expected of course. With the use of the ME 1.7x This one doesn’t.

There were other birds, of course – Brown-throated Parakeets that flew past low and quickly threw us for a heart-pounding loop. Nevertheless, it was still a magical experience sitting in the jungle. My father referred to it as a jumbie bird , and I, being a legitimate bird nerd corrected him with “no dad, it is a pygmy owl” I had been gifted with this massive volume and of course had perused the bird section with gusto – so although I was unaware of the exact species, I was sure of it being a pygmy owl!
