In April, when I recently visited, there are huge flocks of Snow Geese , with the occasional smaller groups of Canada Goose , Cacking Goose , and Greater White-Fronted Goose. My visit on Saturday morning was meant to be a quick stop to scan the ducks, geese, and gulls to see if anything interesting was around. There were also several hundred Canada Geese to pick through and whole bunch more gulls. Digging through the geese and gulls was not as awarding as scoping the ducks had been.

Nenes are attractive geese, though they were named for their soft calls rather than their looks. They probably evolved from the Canada Goose, and today sport black faces, white necks, and grayish bodies. Unlike other geese, Nenes prefer walking to swimming. Still, these geese face significant population threats.

Despite my best efforts and despite seeing around 200 Canada Geese , I had no luck with the Specklebelly. I saw lots of Canada Geese – about 450 – but no Greater White-fronted Goose. Little geese are awesome, at least when you find them. I visited Hamlin Beach in search of an errant Ross’s Goose mixed in with Canadas but found only Snow Geese. Corey’s Best Bird of the Weekend was a self-found Cackling Goose at Baisley Pond Park in Queens. I also encountered lots of Snow Buntings. How about you?
