Nisqually Wildlife Refuge. Nearly 800 acres of wetlands and tidal flats provide diverse habitat for the local birds, as well as large numbers of migratory species, including thousands of ducks and geese. The last weekend of January found me in the frosty Pacific Northwest, meeting some long over due work and family obligations.

The best place I could come up with that was within a short drive of my in-laws’ place in Yorba Linda was the San Joaquin Wildlife Sanctuary in nearby Irvine, only a quick twenty-minute drive away. The goose flies out early with a flock of Canada Geese so if you want to see it get there at or shortly after dawn!

Around thirty miles from Missoula in the Bitterroot Valley lies the Lee Metcalf National Wildlife Refuge. A second pond held not only more of the same, but some American Coots and Canada Geese. Fish and Wildlife Service a. As a result, early migration season is an excellent time to visit. Most welcome.

It is extremely unusual that we birders can still walk the East Pond of Jamaica Bay Wildlife Refuge in November. By now water levels should be high and the pond should be full as ducks, both dabbling and diving, are making their way south from cooler climes.

The nature reserve is really well managed by the Yorkshire Wildlife Trust with numerous hides and wheelchair access to much of the reserve. The nature reserve is constantly evolving and although part of it is a former sand quarry it has been carefully developed to encourage wildlife. Greylag Geese in front of Wild Bird Cafe.

The reservoir offered Tufted Ducks , Eurasian Wigeon , Gadwall , Northern Shoveler , Common Pochard , Eurasian Teal , Eurasian Coots , Great Crested Grebes , Little Grebes , Canada Geese and Greylag Geese. If constructed properly, these facilities can be not only a boon to birders and other wildlife enthusiasts but an obvious benefit to their local communities. One of the best examples in the world is the Arcata Marsh and Wildlife Sanctuary on the northern California coast. There were House Finches ( Capodacus mexicanus ).

I haven’t even been to all of the best national wildlife refuges for birding. Lifers includes Gambel’s Quail and Neotropic Cormorant, but the real highlights were the morning fly-out of Sandhill Cranes and the evening fly-in of Snow Geese. I am a westerner who has lived in San Francisco and Portland my entire birding life.

I’m certain Allagash used the familiar, cultivated blackberry in Uncommon Crow, but an unrelated “blackberry” found in northern climes more widely known as the crowberry is a favorite of many wildlife species. It would make a fitting choice for this beer, but I suppose it’s best to leave the crowberries to the crows.

Russell National Wildlife Refuge ? Moreover, children can watch nest cams without adult supervision so a parent’s lack of knowledge or interest is no boundary to the child’s education, the way it would be if learning required a visit to the park or an investment in binoculars. I was also notified of a study of Brant behavior that is being done collectively by wildlife agencies from New Jersey, New York, and Canada. When recovered, it can be used to figure out where the goose has been. By reporting the banded goose I gave one more data point to to this scientific effort.

One count I undertake every year is the Game and Wildlife Conservation Trust’s Big Farmland Bird Count.

Waterfowl is defined here as swans, geese, and ducks. Along the way Canada Geese and Brant will be found, and on the bay side of the peninsula Snow Geese , American Black Duck , Mallard , Hooded Merganser , and Common Goldeneye should all be spotted. Most winters Snow Geese are a gimme when birding Queens.

We had already planned on at least one night in Eugene, and spending a day at Fern Ridge Wildlife Area. I have gotten to the point where there were very few waterfowl that I need for my years’ list, but I was able to add Canvasbacks , and Cackling Geese. This is a 60 mile side trip from Eugene, straight west to the Pacific coast.

It’s a real shame, though, because these battlefields can be a real haven for wildlife and are often located in parts of the country that don’t otherwise have a lot of preserved land. Birders at Vicksburg counted 45 species, including Snow Geese , Barred Owl , Brown Thrasher , 152 Yellow-rumped Warblers , Fish Crow , and Eastern Towhee.

By their very name, most would assume you can’t spot Snow Geese in Florida. The Sunshine State isn’t known for its massive snow drifts, nor for the massive flocks of Snow Geese that grace states like Texas and New Mexico every winter.
