Here in Suffolk we now have impressive wintering flocks of Barnacle Geese, often numbering 1000 birds or more. The purist birders take little interest in them, regarding them as no more interesting, or exciting, than the flocks of Canada Geese that have long been established in the county. It’s spectacular stuff.

Most of the world’s domestic geese can be traced back thousands of years to the wild Greylag Goose ( Anser anser ) although domestic geese were also bred from Swan Goose ( A. Nenes are attractive geese, though they were named for their soft calls rather than their looks. They probably evolved from the Canada Goose, and today sport black faces, white necks, and grayish bodies. Unlike other geese, Nenes prefer walking to swimming. Still, these geese face significant population threats.

Reading Deb's post about the goslings at Poplar and getting Jenny 's request to sign a petition to save the Canada geese of Ballwin, Missouri from mass extermination reminded me how much I miss the wildlife at the neighborhood we lived in from 2002-early 2005. Now I have the drama of the feral cats and of course the greyhounds.

We are a far bigger problem on this planet than the (over)population of feral cats, elephants, Canada geese, or any other creature we "manage" or want to manage, "humanely" or otherwise.

The causes were the usual reasons for island extinction—deforestation by both humans and invasive plants that crowded out native plants, hunting, and invasive rats, mongoose, monkeys, and, of course, feral cats. They have a hard enough time with Canada Geese. Is this the type of bird behavior that makes sense in our world?

Feral Turkey are also quite common. As well as this species you might see Black Swans , Canada Geese and of course Mallards and Mallard/Grey Duck hybrids everywhere as well. Other wading types birds you can see less commonly are Pied Stilts and White-faced Herons ; keep your eyes open as you go past wetter areas.
