I submitted five checklists from four different locations yielding 44 species. There were California Scrub-Jays gathering up as many sunflower seeds as they could hold in their beaks… and Spotted Towhees who would occasionally perch up in the trees waiting their turn. All in all, I tallied 44 species. Fun birding!

On New Year’s Day 2016, our last day in California before heading back to New York, I was pleased for the chance to get out for a few hours in the morning to jump start the year list. The goose flies out early with a flock of Canada Geese so if you want to see it get there at or shortly after dawn! The things are everywhere!

California is blessed with 51 NWRs and Wildlife Management Areas (WMA), second only to North Dakota with 77. One species I can always count on at Colusa NWR is the Black-crowned Night-Heron ( Nycticorax nycticorax ), which boasts a large resident population. The male of the species has the upper portion of the head, back of neck, back and wings all glossy black. The male is the only Black-necked Stilt in the second segment of this video, along with several Greater White-fronted Geese, and the third bird that comes into view in the final segment that is larger than the other two birds.

One of the best examples in the world is the Arcata Marsh and Wildlife Sanctuary on the northern California coast. The fence surrounding the facility is bordered by a dense mixed forest of pine and deciduous trees giving several sparrow and finch species a good location to hang out and observe the birders.

More than three million ducks and one million geese migrate to the Sacramento Valley every fall. In 1985, waterfowl populations had plummeted to record lows.

Like several of my favorite NWRs, this one was established as a haven for migratory birds, most notably waterfowl, during the bad old days when uncontrolled hunting and habitat loss had put the future of even species we now think of as common in doubt. A second pond held not only more of the same, but some American Coots and Canada Geese.

Imagine waking up to the call of thousands of ducks, geese, and every kind of marsh bird you can imagine. By the time we left, I had recorded one new Lifer, 12 New Year Birds, and a total of 76 species. The Little Big Years stand as follows: Little Big Year Species – 860. I want to reach 500 birds in the ABA, get my Queens list to 295, see a total of at least 500 species, and get my World Life List to 1,100. But how did I see so many species this year?

Here we will actually stop for a full day, as there is a 10,000 acre wetland refuge, which should hold several species of gulls, White-fronted Geese and Black Brant, just to name a few. As far as my year’s list, this last weekend netted me 6 more species, putting me at 127 species.

It was a destination I had never experienced so I made a few phone calls and got some information from the California Department of Fish and Wildlife agent who actually runs both the Butte Valley and the Shasta Valley Wildlife Areas, which are about 25 miles apart. In total we counted seventeen species at the rest stop!

The reason the location is remaining undisclosed is that reliable Mangrove Cuckoos are difficult to find in the American Birding Association area and are a very sought after species. En route to our next stop we slowed down next to a park and spotted the now countable Egyptian Geese. We needed countable species! Come on, Carlos!

During the 70s my list grew slowly but surely thanks to European holidays, but in 1978 it received its first major boost with a holiday in California. It was during this period that I took part in a bird race in Kenya, where I saw 290 species in one day, 442 in two. Taiga Bean Geese with Greater Whitefronts in Estonia.

I think it’s a good assumption that Peter Pyle updated and wrote species descriptions, particularly for the Hawaiian birds. These are the species that immediately come to my mind, and I probably missed some. Paul Lehman and Larry Rosche updated the map, with Lehman doing the data work and Rosche on graphics.
