The Grey-silky Flycatcher Ptilogonys cincerus , the is nearly an endemic of central Mexico, but for a few vagrants who vacation down in Guatemala.

The Golden Eagle is not only the National Bird of Mexico, but considered very threatened. These were my first Golden Eagles here in Mexico. The Picidae family was well represented, with both Gila and Ladder-back woodpeckers , as well a pair of Gilded Flickers all spending some time in this oak grove. Here is the Gila Woodpecker.

I happen to think the Crested Cara cara is one of the most beautiful birds in the falcon family. They stay here in Mexico despite the heat, and raise their families. California Quail are quite common here in the desert, but they are still absolutely beautiful, and fun to photograph.

This bird spent the 2011-2012 winter at Colusa National Wildlife Refuge in northern California, migrated someplace exotic and distant in February, and returned to the same pond at the beginning of this month. This bird has two of the qualities that birders most want in a bird: it is a total crippler, and is staggeringly rare.
