As I have explained before these islands are the best place for a lot of the birding here because they are more easily protected from introduced mammals which wreck such havoc on the wildlife here. Since 1984 it has been planted with native bush and pests were controlled, and is now used as a wildlife reserve.

After the owners contacted the Royal Socieity for the Protection of Birds (RSPB), looking for an explanation as to where the heck all these birds came from, it was determined that the farm would be used as a feeding station. Tomorrow morning we will head on down to England, and the township of Hull, to visit the Spurn Wildlife Reserve.

I went out with the morning sunrise tour and then came back with the wildlife tour in the afternoon, something they are prepared to do for birders who want to spend time on Blumine Island (if both tours are going anyway). They are breeding and expanding on the island and I can go back one day and know I have a chance of seeing them then.

However early March sees the passage of a vastly underrated migrant to British Shores, or should that be from British Shores as they have probably been present all winter? By March though Scandinavian Rock Pipit begins to show some changes into breeding plumage and outs itself as a migrant rather than a resident. I am green with envy!!

My first ever story for 10,000 Birds was about the wonderful city reserve of Karori Wildlife Sanctuary, here in Wellington, a city that has been my home for 9 years this week. They manage a number of reserves around the UK to protect waterfowl, the most famous being Slimbridge (another iconic place I haven’t made it to yet).

Corey encountered a bunch of winners, but 24 Common Redpolls at Jamaica Bay Wildlife Refuge, in almost the exact same spot he saw them a couple of years ago, feeding on birch inflorescence by the East Pond, were easily his best birds of the weekend. Also present in other parts of the park were fox and white-throated sparrows.

Another 170 are in captivity, many of them breeding stock for reintroduction efforts. Eventually, I found the lone whooping crane present at the refuge by its call.
