In my homeland, some 800 km / 500 mi further north, these ducks are common on migration but very rare in the breeding season and I realized that these are my first young birds – ever. A few Lesser Kestrels by the dyke wall, then a Black-eared Wheatear at some cattle fencing. Ferruginous Duck – Aythya nyroca 2.

They are no doubt breeding here once again this year. They are quite possibly here to breed once again. Black-winged Stilt have been in the area in large numbers to breed in previous wet years. Wedge-tailed Eagle -bigger than the cattle!? We also found our first Pink-eared Ducks for 2021 and also Red-kneed Dotterels.

It actually looked like the station owner was breeding birds rather than cattle! This group were hanging out with some Plumed Whistling Ducks. During July we would normally expect to have about 500 Black-winged Stilt in Roebuck Bay, but judging by what we saw we will have a lot more this year!

A local cattle station out of town received 652mm in the same 24 hour period, so we got off lightly! Plumed-Whistling-Ducks. The Little Egrets are beautifully white and you will note that one has started to get its breeding plumage. We have not seen the end of the rain yet, but for now the land is soaking it up. Each of the dark marks in this photo from August, 2018 was a duck. But such a shallow water depth doesn’t work for our many duck species, and these, along with most gulls, terns, grebes, and larger shorebirds, were nowhere to be seen after the first two weeks of January. But mostly, there was just lots and lots of water.

Several Ferruginous Duck and one surprising male Goosander , four Glossy Ibises , Common Kingfishers , Eurasian Hopooes , a high note of a Penduline Tit somewhere from the willows along the canal, Eurasian Spoonbills , European Turtle Doves gently purrring …. Five years ago, I observed Dalmatian Pelicans breeding on purpose-built platforms.

There have been good numbers of Australian Wood Ducks near the dam recently. Australian Wood Ducks and Black-shouldered Lapwings. Another small body of water well below the trail adds Pacific Black Duck , Grey Teal and Chestnut Teal to the list and then a lone Australasian Grebe. Two Cattle Egrets with four cows!

Masked Lapwings , Straw-necked Ibis , Plumed Whistling-Ducks , Magpie-larks , Cattle Egrets and Australian Pratincoles all gather around and in the drainage channel. All of the nice green vegetation around these drainage channels is very popular with the Cattle Egrets and by November they have some beautiful breeding plumage.

The Little Grebe is of course a very common bird that can still surprise by its beauty in its breeding plumage. Black-naped Orioles are breeding in Fengxian. Somehow I did not think Cattle Egrets would eat dragonflies (shouldn’t they eat beef, at least judging from their name?) Here is a presumed pair.
