Located about 20 miles from Lakeview, Oregon, and sitting at an elevation of 5100 feet, this 208 acre lake is home to many species of fish, including Largemouth Bass, Crappie and Bluegill. We saw sparrows–a total of 14 species–and we saw many other great prairie birds, and we often saw them perched on posts. Brewer’s Blackbirds often joined the hordes of Red-winged Blackbirds flitting in and out of the taller grasses and few shrubs.

Great Kiskadees , White-winged Doves , and, above all, Great-tailed Grackles were the species that couldn’t be missed. At the beach there were non stop Magnificent Frigatebirds overhead, Sandwich Terns and Royal Terns working the waves, and Brown Pelicans dropping in regularly. Instead, I got drenched in heavy rains and wind.

March 31, 2015 – I get word from a friend that a non-birder has reported a large white pelican at a lake not more than 5 minutes from my door. Lo and behold, there’s the Mute Swan, with an AMERICAN WHITE PELICAN swimming along beside it. I get the word out.

There was a large raft of hundreds of American Coot , an American White Pelican and lots of duck species. We checked out the shrubs for songbirds while returning to the car and were rewarded with a displaying Red-winged Blackbird. We then checked the Presa El Nogalito for one bird species in particular.

The first stop, Summer Lake Wildlife Refuge in central Oregon is without a doubt one of the most important stop overs for migrating birds on the west coats, no matter the species. Targets acquired, we piled into cars and headed south to Pea Island National Wildlife Refuges, the jewel of the Outer Banks, where we were likely to cross paths with the vast majority of our species for the day.
