I have the photos of a standing White-faced Ibis next to wading Northern Pintails , Northern Shovelers , and American White Pelicans , to prove this.) Here are a few of the other photos that worked for me: This trio of American White Pelicans had its own duck groupies. Bronzed Cowbirds may look like those Brewer’s Blackbirds.

From Yellow-hooded Blackbirds to Purple and Common Gallinules , there are almost too many birds to focus on! For me, there is little difference between this experience and another where the birds are habituated to human presence, pelicans coming in to grab bycatch from fishermen or storks at a landfill even.

Just from the two roads (one toll, one free) that cross the lake, and a small part of its total shore, on a good day in December or January you can count on seeing thousands of Northern Shovelers , Northern Pintails , and Yellow-headed Blackbirds. The same could be said of the White Pelicans, but Pelicans are just too amusing.

After a night at the Point Reyes hostel and a long walk to Limantour Beach the next morning, Katherine and I drove into Point Reyes Station for a breakfast of buttermilk blueberry scones at the excellent Bovine Bakery , where the Brewer’s Blackbirds ( Euphagus cyanocephalus ) outside gathered around us and begged for crumbs.

There was a large raft of hundreds of American Coot , an American White Pelican and lots of duck species. We checked out the shrubs for songbirds while returning to the car and were rewarded with a displaying Red-winged Blackbird. With the sun gaining in strength and out of the wind we were soon quite comfortable.

174 American White Pelican – Pelecanus erythrorhynchos. 175 Brown Pelican – Pelecanus occidentalis. 424 Eurasian Blackbird – Turdus merula. 480 Yellow-headed Blackbird – Xanthocephalus xanthocephalus. 496 Red-winged Blackbird – Agelaius phoeniceus. 6 Brant – Branta bernicla.

This group of American White Pelicans were good enough to stop right where I wanted them to, to get this shot. In the same shallow water as the pelicans, there were several hundred American Avocets. Yellow-headed Blackbirds, Red-winged Blackbirds, Brewers Blackbirds, Marsh Wrens , And Common Yellowthroats were incredibly plentiful.
