The boat is called the Legacy and it is an 80 foot whale watching vessel that generally seats 115, but takes about 70 for birding trips. If I saw that bird, I did not appreciate it, so it is not on my list. My recollection of prior trips is that we used relatively small fishing boats and had 20-25 birders, plus the leaders.

If you haven’t yet embraced the theory or practice of birthday birds, I recommend that, next time your special day rolls around, you make it a point to pursue a seasonally appropriate species you don’t regularly see. I got back into birding less than a decade ago, long after moving to Mexico in 1983. So I can hardly speak with authority on birding in the U.S. A quick study as I researched this post revealed that fully 37 Arizonan “specialties” are common birds right here where I live. So that’s a big negative.

When a White Wagtail was found on 10 December at Cabrillo Beach in San Pedro, just south of Los Angeles, I was pretty stoked. After all, I would be arriving in southern California on 19 December, landing in Los Angeles at LAX, about thirty minutes from the site of the sighting. I could not find the bird.

Only, once I got there, I discovered that the coffee, while good, can’t compare to the birds. Our group saw over 400 birds on our 15-day tour of the Pantanal, Cerrado and the Amazon (Cristalino Lodge). I have a thing for birds with large eye-rings (also for birds with ‘spectacles,’ a similar look).

Not as much as many others, certainly, but enough that the birds of the Gulf Stream and pelagic “culture”, for lack of better word, are familiar to me. Birding the Gulf Stream requires patience. It requires long stretches of bird scarcity. I like it very much. You not only had to have a quick trigger with your IDs.
