It was a very hot day and there had been a bush-fire right to the reserve border only a few weeks prior to our visit and as such we did not have particularly high hopes for a lot of birds.

The website gives you an idea of the birds you can hope to encounter and there have been ongoing studies taking place since 1986. Wildlife concentrates at the Floe Edge, and although we just missed Narwhal as pack ice moved in just after we arrived, the place was littered with Polar Bear. Birds, though, were there by the thousands. The bird life is astounding, both in sheer number and in their nearness. Still, with that many bear you have to stay vigilant.

Until this original Brexit, free passage of species had been possible. Thus Britain can count only around 40 species of trees and large shrubs as native. The stems rise from the rhizome which nestles in the leaf litter of the woodland floor. It is slow to spread however and as such is a good indicator of ancient woodland.
