My aunt Greet gave me a book in 1975 that featured the 60 most endangered birds in Europe. Amazingly and quite contrary to what you would believe from the gloomy news most of these birds have since recovered and are doing well. Barnacle Geese even made it to “agricultural pest” status. That’s OK – it will be too hot for birding.

The Christmas Bird Count was the answer. The IWC census starts from mid-January following the logic that it is the period when the birds have reached their wintering grounds and are rather static, so the chance of double-counting the same flock is minimal. But it is so frustrating to pass the birds by without IDing them!

Most of the world’s domestic geese can be traced back thousands of years to the wild Greylag Goose ( Anser anser ) although domestic geese were also bred from Swan Goose ( A. Feral geese run the gamut from pure white to almost entirely gray or brown. cygnoides ) ancestors. We certainly see enough of them, don’t we?

However – and I am not saying this out of misplaced national pride – there is one bird in the Netherlands that proves Jefferson wrong and Buffon right: the White-tailed Eagle (or Sea Eagle ). So yes, I needed to see this beast, this flying door, this scourge of all things’ geese, this modern Roc. It’s the only Dutch eagle.

After spending the early morning on Saturday birding at Alley Pond Park I was happy with having seen my first Eastern Phoebe of the year and thought I could rest on my laurels for the rest of the weekend. And the West Pond was covered with Snow Geese , with well over 1,500 birds all around the edges.

I would advise allowing as much time as possible if you hope to walk all of the trails and to be able to explore the different environments and the many species of birds. Although Tawny Frogmouths are well camouflaged I did notice the shape of the tree was not quite right and there they were. The sanctuary is open from 8am-4pm daily.

This will change over time of course and once it rains again you would need to consider if you had the right vehicle to access the area. This whole area floods during the wet season and water remains throughout the year most years and attracts a lot of bird-life. Dragonflies photobombing on the right as we approach.

Actually, I visited the Two Towers twice, had about 50 bird species each time and about 60 in total, so this is sort of a composite tour description. First Greylag Geese , Gadwall , both Caspian and Yellow-legged Gulls appear, together with dozens of Pygmy Cormorants and one Eurasian Sparrowhawk.

The distribution of color morphs is unequal in the Snow Goose population, with the maximum number of blue-morph geese occurring in mid-continent breeding and wintering areas 1. Well, it took about ten minutes to find out, as I was sitting in the RV, right at water’s edge, photographing a lovely pair of Rufus-banded Honeyeaters , when a small, 2-meter-long Crocodile came rushing up out of the water, right at my door! The edges of the highway have started to dry out now and you can get off the bitumen in a few places to take in all of the bird activity. Now we have much cooler overnight temperatures the water level has remained quite constant for a few weeks, but the bird-life is constantly changing.

There are excellent birding opportunities along the highway throughout the year and the area still remains flooded from the rains over our Wet Season and it has been a breeding site for several species of birds. Not only have the birds arrived from other areas of Australia to breed, but many other creatures have been visible for those of us that are prepared to go bush-walking in extreme heat. Palmerston lies to the south east and Darwin to the north west and there is a bicycle path almost right to the reserve. The bicycle path takes you through the bush offering a variety of bird-life along the route and then I cross over at McMillans Road and enter the lagoon system at Fiddlers Lane. Magpie Geese.

Last month we decided to head north to go camping and birding and top up the 2018 Year List. It is now very hot and dry inland and the temperature does not drop much at night, so you go to bed early and get up early like the animals and birds. When you are able to find a lagoon that is land-locked and offers great birding and you are able to walk around the edge it is a delight. The trees are now incredibly tall and are currently flowering offering some great birds. It would still offer excellent birding opportunities from the picnic area. Tree planting is good!
