I hope everyone participated in at least one day of the four day Great Backyard Bird Count of 2018. As I walked out on my back porch on Friday morning, the first day of the count, it was a cool, clear day and the birds were very active at the feeders. I submitted five checklists from four different locations yielding 44 species.

Yet, one other hunting attempt in the same area I do remember. The Mallard did something that all dabbling ducks can do but I haven’t seen any of them doing it but this one – it took a dive and disappeared underwater. (My The next memorable hunt came from winter 2006/07. And, now, at eBird. What is it doing?? And not moving.

Out of just under 200 bird species I observed this year in SE Europe, there are 6 threatened species. Some of them were always uncommon in the region, others are highly localised, some are hard to notice among thousands of similar birds, but others were abundant recently and one of them still is, despite the decrease in numbers.

When you are able to find a lagoon that is land-locked and offers great birding and you are able to walk around the edge it is a delight. The trees are now incredibly tall and are currently flowering offering some great birds. It would still offer excellent birding opportunities from the picnic area. Tree planting is good!

I also often observe a pair of Wedge-tailed Eagles towards the hills on my left as I follow this section of trail. There is a water trough for the dairy cows, but sometimes the Pacific Black Ducks take advantage of the trough! Pacific Black Ducks. Where there is remaining water on the edge of the trail there are often birds.

I mentioned recently about the arrival of the Black-tailed Native-hens at Bilyuin Pool this year, but of course there were many other species of birds to enjoy. Brown Falcons , a Brown Goshawk, Wedge-tailed Eagles and also a Nankeen Kestrel hunted in the general area of the pool and were seen regularly during the day.
