This method of marking largely relies on recapturing the bird in order to read and record the band data.

On Thursday, 24 April, Eugene Nichols was minding his own business, birding along the shore of Lake Ontario on Point Peninsula, in the far northern reaches of New York State. He found an all white bird that didn’t belong and eventually deduced that he was looking at a Willow Ptarmigan. Of course, I had to go and see the bird!

The Refuge is now home to nearly 200 species of birds, over 50 species of mammals, 25 species of reptiles and amphibians, and a wide variety of insects, fish and plants. This is an Urban Refuge ! I have found Trip Reports a useful way to organize checklists from birding trips. For example, in May, I was on the Maryland shore for a wedding and submitted several checklists for Maryland, Delaware, and the District of Columbia. Two of those birds were lifers ( Worm-eating Warbler and Grasshopper Sparrow ).
