Agapanthus are in full flower everywhere at the moment and line farm drive-ways and parts of the trail. I soon encountered many of the local birds that I have become very familiar with over recent weeks. There had been quite a few Cattle Egrets in the area until recently and so it was good to see them for the first time in 2020.

I had been contacted by Bill at Birds & Beans Coffee, a wonderful shade-grown distributor I’d been using for a few years, to help do a breeding bird survey on a local organic farm. Barn Swallows lined up on the wires outside his cattle barn and Grasshopper Sparrows sang unseen from uncut hayfields.

Susliks are becoming rarer: they need cattle to graze and keep the grass short. But on modern farms, cattle are being kept indoors and if the pasture becomes overgrown, ground squirrels disappear. Others are chasing each other, some are quarrelling. A few are on sentry duty, standing on their hind legs and watching for eagles.

While entering our double kayak I asked Andrew Hester, a local bird expert, if bilharzia is present in the shallows of the Ngotwane Dam, further down the river. The lady living on a farm by the Gaborone Dam said ‘I saw a croc taking an egret.’. The gentleman living on a farm by the Ngotwane Dam said ‘A croc took my dog, right there!’.

The reason the location is remaining undisclosed is that reliable Mangrove Cuckoos are difficult to find in the American Birding Association area and are a very sought after species.
