While I often tease Corey about how many albatrosses we have down here in New Zealand, the fact is that the United States has three species of Albatross that breed within its boundaries, albeit one of them only very rarely, and visit the western shores of North America. It is also a very attractive bird, as I hope you will agree.

Many states choose their representative bird based on common, native birds spending part or all of the year within the states’ borders. South Dakota went a different way, designating the Ring-necked Pheasant as the state bird in 1943. In Hawaii, they are found as high as 11,000 feet !

27, 2015 Christian Gutierrez, Raymond Justice, and Carter Mesker went on a camping trip to Ka’ena Point Natural Area Reserve on Oahu, Hawaii. Ka’ena Point is also a breeding ground for the Federally protected Laysan albatross, where 45 nests were being carefully monitored by the non-profit Pacific Rim Conservation. Gutierrez was 18.

Christmas Shearwaters Much less common that their larger relatives, but at the same time their habit of surface breeding means they are always around to find in certain spots. Tristam’s Storm-petrel From a tiny petrel to a fairly hefty storm-petrel, this species has a small breeding presence on Tern Island. These guys get around!

We have seen them on remote beaches hunting shorebirds and taking their eggs and they have been responsible for much of the egg loss in breeding Pied Oystercatchers along the Broome coast. We are lucky in Broome that due to our remoteness we rarely get invasive bird species. They are incredibly cunning and not easily trapped.

The noddies form their own little subgroup within the terns, a small tropical group (how related they are to each other I am unsure) that will be familiar to anyone birding on tropical islands, especially those far from continents. It does make them excellent subjects for photography if you ever find yourself in their colonies however.
