That spot is Battery Harris Platform at Fort Tilden, a hawk watch platform built on top of the remnants of an old artillery battery that helped protect New York Harbor back when Fort Tilden was actually still a military base. So I had to settle for seeing a Black Phoebe , some Killdeers , and Caspian Terns standing by the Creek Mouth — all species I can see near home — and lots of Mallards , which do not occur in central Mexico, but are common in much of the rest of the world. I was wrong. At first I was quite upset.

At five-forty-five Sunday morning I started the eBird checklist while perched atop the Battery Harris Platform at Fort Tilden. As always, I was the first to the platform and in the light northwest wind and under a full moon I sipped my coffee and willed birds to make some noise so I could start checking off species.

And seeing as there were good northwest winds overnight, weather radar had shown lots of birds taking off, and the winds were expected to continue from the north through the morning, I decided that I would make my way to Fort Tilden at first light and install myself on the Battery Harris Platform. And this bird was way out over the water.

Head for the sea only when you fully recharge your batteries. Other species of interest include the southernmost breeding population of Greylag Goose in Europe, Goosander (at bigger and deeper Megali Prespa), Hazel Grouse (at Mt. Some 312 species were recorded here and my September daily averages were around 70.

I dropped my meager box of baby supplies off and stopped to chat to the two volunteers who were already helping people who had stopped in looking for warm clothing, batteries, and a sympathetic ear. Also, we saw a Blue Grosbeak , some Fox Sparrows , and both species of kinglets. I have never seen Evening Grosbeaks in Queens.

In the end, I truly did set out to reduce the number of birds that I feature here from 1302, my years total species, down to 10-12. At the end of the year, my tally for hummingbirds was 45 different species, but the winner hands down was the White-crowned Coquette that was found in the Quizarra area of Costa Rica.

I should say trying to start my car because the battery had died overnight and it would not start. Neither was evident as I scoped the inlet and the ocean, though Northern Gannets just off the end of the jetty, a host of sea ducks, four species of gull, and a constant flow of Long-tailed Ducks flying in and out of the inlet kept me busy.

The storm surge at The Battery on the southern shore of Manhattan reached 4.0 the rescued White-tailed Tropicbird from Rensselaer County South Polar Skua was another species that didn’t always weather the storm well. The other Oceanodroma species spotted was Band-rumped Storm-petrel. That is absolutely nuts.

It would be difficult to identify by its Latin species name only though – albogularis means white-throated, which does not really strike me as this species’ main characteristic. The other species in the genus of Picumnus are all in the Americas, with the Speckled Piculet the only one in Asia.
