It was also great to finally travel overseas again, meet a lot of people I did not know (and some I did), to be in a new country… and not just the new country, but its best birding area, where almost all local hotspots are yellow (150+ species) and several are ochre (200+ sp.), impressive for Central Europe.

Birding Sukau, Sabah, Borneo

This is how it looks like: Or at sunset: A species I did not come for from Shanghai is the Black-crowned Night Heron. Its species name graydoni is in honor of Philip Newenham Graydon (1864-1940), a British planter in Sabah. Why that makes Mr. Graydon worthy of having a bird species named after him is a mystery to me.

Ascending further requires a hike – required to see some high-elevation species absent from elsewhere on the island. But necessity is the mother of invention and some camera battery covers doubled up as spoons to ensure that our stomachs could stop their grumbling! I wasn’t amused, neither was my wife.

The Little Big Year 2018: Best Birds of the Year!

In the end, I truly did set out to reduce the number of birds that I feature here from 1302, my years total species, down to 10-12. In Caines, Australia, we enjoyed a wet morning on the Daintree River, with Murray Hunt, of the Dain Tree River Tours. My favorite of the stay was this White-cheeked Bulbul.
