These arid hills, cloaked in a mosaic of deciduous scrub and desert vegetation, form a northern outpost for several Neotropical species while also harboring several key endemics and southwestern Nearctic species. This poorly documented swallow is a breeding endemic to these high mountains. Lesser Roadrunner with a cicada.

Add more than 350 pairs of White Pelicans to that picture, numerous herons and up to 700 pairs of Pygmy Cormorants breeding in the same reedbeds (cover photo)… It must be bursting with activity in spring, but I was there in mid-September. In all that swirling of swallows, I am not certain was there a third species, so I keep watching.

If you are relying on leg colour or bill colour or bill length then you will really have quite a challenge sorting through all of the species present, but with perseverance you will eventually work it out! They are all in non-breeding plumage to add to the challenge, though some male Bar-tailed Godwit are still carrying a trace of colour.

Ringer Gannets and Boobies (Sulidae) Black-and-white gannets breed on the cold, rocky coasts of the northern and southern oceans.

Straight off the bat we found a Little Grebe and a small flock of distant Cotton Pygmy-geese ! A target bird was next, the Pheasant-tailed Jacana, which was sadly not in breeding plumage but was still attractive. Peter quickly found a Black-headed Gull as well, as well as a Heuglin’s Gull , a rare winter visitor from Siberia.

We observed far fewer Lesser Flamingos, a near-threatened species. And then there were the Flamingos.

The Purple Swamp-hen ( Porphyrio porphyrio ) I turned south, walking past large groups of picnickers which were being patrolled by Australian White Ibis , one of the species of ibis also known as the Sacred Ibis. An Australian White Ibis ( Threskiornis molucca ) that is part of a study of urban birds (tags have been reported!).
