Now, this is a bird species that is declining, and the eight we saw made up twice the total number of Red-headed Woodpeckers I have ever seen before my day on the Backcountry Trail. We watched a Bald Eagle soar on the warm updrafts over the marsh, while another actually stood on a mudflat, looking for prey. A handful of Red-bellied Woodpeckers let loose nasal-like giggles, and spinning around with my binoculars I caught sight of a few of them methodically climbing tree trunks.

In the Circle of Life” category, this Bald Eagle had managed to catch a small squirrel, and was passing over the water. The highlight of the hike, and the day inn fact, was a new Lifer for me, in the form of three Black-backed Woodpeckers. The nice backlighting helps to highlight all the detail in it’s plumage.

In fact, the very first person to guess, Nick , managed to get the third quiz picture correct by calling it a Bald Eagle. Of course, that was the easiest of the three because though the bird in the image is captive, a bird that was injured and can’t be returned to the wild, Bald Eagles do occur regularly and naturally in Queens.

The Bald Eagles that nest along the river had apparently had a very poor breeding season, the high water making their usual fishing spots less productive, so the ornithologist told me; we only saw one of the adults.
