The return of the Old Man

10,000 Birds

There’s something wonderfully primeval about the Northern Bald Ibis: it has the look of a bird that really ought to be extinct. The fact that it’s not is quite surprising, as this curious bird has come very close to the brink. Sadly, they no longer breed in Algeria, while in Turkey no free-flying birds remain.

Swarovski Skills Camp, or men and their toys

10,000 Birds

Yesterday evening I got home from the second Swarovski Skills Camp at Lake Neusiedl in the east of Austria. But Swarovski Optik is a family-owned business, so the then CEO, Mr. Swarovski, categorically rejected the advice and decided: factory stays in Austria, and the prices will only go up! impressive for Central Europe.

My Birding Goals for 2017

10,000 Birds

I know I will be doing my best to make it so, especially from a birding perspective. I’ll bird my butt off and see what happens… I will add at least three new birds to my Queens list. Seawatching, searching out birds in migration both spring and fall, and hoping for rarities is really all I can do. Who knows?
