The main reason for them doing so is due to them needing very little water and they collect the seeds to establish more plants. Calytrix exstipulata There is one very useful group of plants to have in Broome, especially during the Wet Season. If these Storm Lilies start to flower there is a very high chance of rain in the near future.

The Great Bowerbirds only collect white and green, but they have mostly collected white rocks at this location. One of the more vocal birds at the Boab Quarry is the Great Bowerbird. Due to the windy nature of the gravel road over rough terrain, you are actually back in Western Australia when you reach the Behn River. You do return to the Northern Territory again before the Duncan Road returns to Western Australia where it ends at Halls Creek. So, any birds we saw at the Behn River are in Western Australia!

As I got closer to Geelong there were several groups of Black Swans in the shallows feeding. There are 104 of these artistic bollards and each group has a rabbit painted on it somewhere for children to find! It represents a captain bringing live birds to add to the bird collection at the Botanical Garden! Masked Lapwing.

The genus is Cyanoramphus , and they are sometimes known collectively as the kakariki (literally little kaka). The kakariki are an odd group of parakeets, particularly in terms of their distribution. Yellow-crowned Parakeet , Cyanoramphus auriceps. Let’s back up a little bit and introduce the parakeets.

The Australian Brush-turkey ( Alectura lathami ) is a common sight in the rainforests of Australia. A quick walk netted me some Atherton Scrubwrens , an endemic, as well as a Yellow-throated Scrubwren , a species that mostly occurs in southern Australia but has a small disjunct population around the Tableland.
