The Amusing Case of the Gulf Breeze Zoo Canada Geese

Next door to my hometown, the Gulf Breeze Zoo occupies 50 acres near the Santa Rosa Sound. Multiple varieties of ungulates jogged from place to place, while giant rhea birds stalked around looking for food. But the geese didn’t care, going about their business surrounded by dozens of species from around the globe.

Good for animals, of course – particularly some shy mammals. Being a mammal myself, I am understandably much less fond of this animal class than I am of birds. Not in a zoo but in the wild, despite the fence in the background. The chick – quite possibly the cutest bird I saw on this trip – obliged.

Perhaps the star bird here is the Nonggang Babbler , which was first observed by professional ornithologists only in 2005. The birds are not closely related.

Birding Kangding, Sichuan

In Kangding, there is a rather opulent bird hide – two stories, solid construction, spacious, lots of glass, a separate paved parking lot, though mysteriously (and as far as I can tell from my experience of living in China for almost 20 years, not indicative of fundamentally different physical needs of Chinese people) missing a bathroom.
