We spent two blissful days exploring both the waders and wildlife of Lake Yojoa and the tropical splendor of PANACAM Lodge. Nonetheless, a birder’s initial experience in Honduras sets him or her on an inexorable course towards the only species currently named for this gem of a country. That is how the saying goes, right?

I was fortunate enough to spot the individual in this post at Jamaica Bay Wildlife Refuge where it was foraging in bushes and small trees between four and fifteen off of the ground. It breeds across Canada’s boreal forest and most winter in the Caribbean, though some spend the cold months in Central America.

Experiments in the field (the famed Asa Wright Nature Center veranda) involving Bananaquits and bananas came up with numbers ranging from 7 to 16, but a tanager always came along to interfere with Bananaquits’ noisy appreciation of their namesake fruit. Informed literature bears out my experience that most birds are seen singly or in pairs. Jochen Mar 7th, 2011 at 5:51 pm Redgannet, almost all song birds at least in North America (and the Orange Thrush sure won’t be the only old world bird to have them, too) have these filamental plumes on their nape.
