Canada’s National Bird: And the Winner Is …

To attain the top spot, the Gray Jay beat out contenders such as the Common Loon , Snowy Owl , Canada Goose , and Black-capped Chickadee. We were not party to the count of the original decision, so it is not possible to say whether 34% share of the vote was an improved showing, but the Barn Owl in second place scored only 12% of the crosses, giving the Robin little cause for worry. Long live the King! The result did not meet with universal approval however.

I pushed for Wikipedia to adopt them, and then to follow the taxonomy, and given the dominance of Wikipedia in Google search results, this is no small thing. The Barn Owl was a cosmopolitan species, so as it is split the name has to be shared (American, western and eastern). I’m not blind to the list’s faults, though.
