When you review the system, it makes perfect sense: falcons are placed with hawks, nightjars are next to owls, and grebes are close to ducks, rather than separated from them by quail and grouse. Walking to the restaurant involves routine, although reflex, ducking as a tern or noddy comes a little too close to your head. On Lady Elliot Island in our southern Barrier Reef, where I visited in late 2020, the Black Noddies began breeding recently in 1985. No-one visiting the island can ignore the birds. They are everywhere.

Each of the dark marks in this photo from August, 2018 was a duck. And yet, less than halfway through our 2020-2021 winter dry season, Lake Cuitzeo had essentially dried up. In a normal year, I would report thousands of individual ducks at the lake from February through April; this year, I reported none.

The source of this ranking, BirdLife International, lists Bolivia as currently having 1,439 bird species, including 18 breeding endemics. Like most maps, colors are used to indicate seasonal status (breeding resident, Austral migrant/visitor, Boreal migrant, etc.). Distribution maps are also different from other field guides.

Splits were once a much more subjective determination, based on differences in appearance, vocalizations, habits, and breeding preferences. We call this a “lump” But hey, this is 2020. But you pretty much must come to Mexico to see the Mexican Duck , which I see every time I go to our nearest lake.

The eggs are Peregrine Falcon eggs, stolen from aeries in Wales, though Lendrum keeps insisting they’re duck eggs. a close childhood friend of Lendrum’s, Howard Waller, breeds falcons for Sheikh Butti bin Maktoum, a member of the Dubai royal family. Simon & Schuster, February 2020, 336 pages.

There have been good numbers of Australian Wood Ducks near the dam recently. Australian Wood Ducks and Black-shouldered Lapwings. Another small body of water well below the trail adds Pacific Black Duck , Grey Teal and Chestnut Teal to the list and then a lone Australasian Grebe. Black-shouldered Lapwings. Australasian Grebe.

Driving through dairy country we soon added Australian Wood Duck , Pacific Black Duck , Grey Teal , Grey Fantail , Wedge-tailed Eagle , Laughing Kookaburra , Eastern Rosella and Superb Fairy-wren to the 2020 Year List. Eurasian Coot are always there, but I was delighted to find several Blue-billed Ducks to add to the list.

On May 23, I decided to go up to Lake Cuitzeo, in spite of the fact that the lake can seem much less interesting after our winter migrant ducks, waders and shorebirds have left. And it also turned out, to my great surprise, that not all those migratory ducks had left yet. So yes, this appears to be a breeding population.].
