As we all well know there is something very different about 2020. Following on from our first camping trip for 2020 we took another camping trip a bit further afield. Having observed the Cattle Egret in breeding plumage at the Derby Poo Ponds on June 19th we found ourselves at Windjana Gorge first thing the following morning.

A Lake Reborn… sort of

Each of the dark marks in this photo from August, 2018 was a duck. And yet, less than halfway through our 2020-2021 winter dry season, Lake Cuitzeo had essentially dried up. In a normal year, I would report thousands of individual ducks at the lake from February through April; this year, I reported none.

Fish Creek to Buffalo

There have been good numbers of Australian Wood Ducks near the dam recently. Australian Wood Ducks and Black-shouldered Lapwings. Another small body of water well below the trail adds Pacific Black Duck , Grey Teal and Chestnut Teal to the list and then a lone Australasian Grebe. Two Cattle Egrets with four cows!

Buffalo 157
