So does this Mexican Duck (NOT a Mallard sub-race, according to the 2020 AOS decision): Note the (lack of) depth of this water. But the Fulvous Whistling-Ducks were the ones that really won my hearts. Extra points to these Whistling-Ducks for finding water deep enough to swim in. Maybe they just like a little variety.

Our 2020 drought taught me that any body of water, no matter how small, might host these “drought refugees” in dry years. As soon as we had parked beside the lake, we saw a wide variety of migratory ducks: Canvasbacks, Gadwalls, Blue-winged Teals, American Wigeons , and even a pair of Redheads.

The normally-shallower west side attracts all sorts of ducks and shorebirds; the east side usually offers only American Coots and Clark’s Grebes.) This lake is “standing-room-only” Nearer the shore, there were also a few Black-necked Stilts , Fulvous Whistling-Ducks , and Common Gallinules. I’ll keep you posted.

Just two weeks earlier, the only ducks I had seen were a handful of resident Mexican Ducks and Fulvous Whistling-Ducks. I’m not sure what they think of 2020’s low water levels, but they looked happy!

There are (as of 2020) approximately 550,000 world-wide users of eBird. This is not to suggest that one must bounce about the Pacific Ocean on a pelagic tour to qualify as a birder.

It does seem like the order is concurrent with the 61st Supplement, which came out in 2020, but Northwestern Crow is included as a full species. The grand total is 817 species! It was actually a very easy count since each species account is one page long except for Red-tailed Hawk and Dark-eyed Junco, which get two pages each.

When you review the system, it makes perfect sense: falcons are placed with hawks, nightjars are next to owls, and grebes are close to ducks, rather than separated from them by quail and grouse. It yielded 88 on January 1st, 2020.) But I was more surprised by a Cinnamon Teal — my first duck for the reservoir — accompanied by 5 Pied-billed and 6 Least Grebes , since Least Grebes , especially, tend to be solitary birds here. Northern Pintails may be our most handsome wintering duck.

Walking to the restaurant involves routine, although reflex, ducking as a tern or noddy comes a little too close to your head. On Lady Elliot Island in our southern Barrier Reef, where I visited in late 2020, the Black Noddies began breeding recently in 1985. No-one visiting the island can ignore the birds. They are everywhere.

Each of the dark marks in this photo from August, 2018 was a duck. And yet, less than halfway through our 2020-2021 winter dry season, Lake Cuitzeo had essentially dried up. In a normal year, I would report thousands of individual ducks at the lake from February through April; this year, I reported none.

We call this a “lump” But hey, this is 2020. For example, it wasn’t until this year that the Mallard, with its strongly differentiated males and females and semi-migratory habits, was definitively separated from the non-migratory Mexican Duck, in which males and females are almost identical.
