These two Hadada Ibis are reenacting the mirror scene from “Duck soup” (sort of). Then, in 2018, other researchers did DNA testing on the sample specimen and found it was just an ordinary Yellow-rumped Tinkerbird with some kind of slight color mutation ( source ). I think the people running the place even fed them.

But a drake Wood Duck is always appreciated and that it plopped down in front of him at Big John’s Pond at Jamaica Bay Wildlife Refuge made it even nicer. Turacos, hornbills, and diverse ducks were far more interesting than the robins and catbirds scrounging around the exhibits. The reason I ask is because my family and I visited the Bronx Zoo this weekend. Not only did I see all manner of international avifauna, but I enjoyed seeing them.

They found twenty-four species of ducks, geese, and swans, not bad for a half-day. I finally found one of those Lesser Black-backed Gulls I’ve been chasing all winter, a worthy replacement for the rare geese I hoped to find at Braddock Bay’s North Marina.

Last week I mentioned the Tufted Duck that had suddenly appeared in Australia and it is not the only vagrant duck to have chosen to reside in Australia at the moment. All of a sudden we observed them and realised the two smaller ducks that seemed to be constantly feeding were the two of the three ducks we were looking for.

I was at Baranda fish farm, north of Belgrade, following a short embankment without much hope: swans and ducks at the right hand side and a solar powered screamer at the left, meant to scare cormorants with sounds of shooting, reloading, shooting and bird cries (presumably in agony). There has been a steady increase of Plumed Whistling-Ducks , which now number in the thousands, and trying to find any other birds among them is quite problematic due to their large numbers. This was not our first encounter for 2018 around Broome, because we had in fact observed them close to the Broome Bird Observatory on April 29th.

There have been some incredible duck observations in Australia over previous years. A Tufted Duck and Garganey have caused some excitement and also more recently a Green-winged Teal. When you review the system, it makes perfect sense: falcons are placed with hawks, nightjars are next to owls, and grebes are close to ducks, rather than separated from them by quail and grouse. Although there are not huge numbers of ducks in the area at the moment they will be very spread out now the land is flooded. There can actually be too much water for ducks! Pacific Black Ducks. Each of the dark marks in this photo from August, 2018 was a duck. But such a shallow water depth doesn’t work for our many duck species, and these, along with most gulls, terns, grebes, and larger shorebirds, were nowhere to be seen after the first two weeks of January. But mostly, there was just lots and lots of water.
