While I had a lovely pair of White-breasted Nuthatches to watch while I enjoyed a glass of this wine, I was left to my own devices when it came to opening the bottle: my birds were much more interested in the frozen blocks of suet hanging in my backyard than in any bottle opening duties. I saw my first migratory Eastern Phoebe of 2016 on 18 March at Kissena Park, thus kicking off spring for myself two days early. Over the last ten years my average first phoebe has been the 23rd of March, meaning that this bird was five days earlier than average and beat last year’s first phoebe by ten days. 2015 – 28 March.

My birding buddy Meryl actually spotted it first and she might have been mildly taken aback by the enthusiasm I showed for my first phoebe of the year. The bird was relatively distant but I did manage to poorly digiscope a few shots, the best of which is above. 2016 – 18 March. For me, it is now officially spring! Enjoy spring!

Corey could have chosen his first Pine Siskins of the year in New York, a Red-headed Woodpecker , a late Osprey , or a Vesper Sparrow as his Best Bird of the Weekend this weekend. But it was a common bird sitting in good light that he tapped for the honors, a Gray Catbird that cooperated wonderfully in Kissena Park. How about you?
