Best Bird of the Weekend (Last of October 2016)

At least one weekend a year, bats–particularly the vampiric kind–command more attention than birds, at least from most people. A cold, productive day spent birding with a friend from Buffalo was marked by two owls, lots of ducks, Tundra Swans , several gulls, and other targets not possible in tropical Costa Rica. Some of you may well remember the quarry that I wrote about in October 2016. The remaining amount of water was really quite disastrous for the local bird-life. Of course the water will have been evaporating daily, but it was more than appreciated by the local bird-life. The birds were mostly coming down onto the mud to drink.

What to Do at High Island When the Winds are South

It stops those thousands of migrating birds flying across the Gulf of Mexico and directs them right onto the trees, fields, sanctuaries, beaches along the Bolivar Peninsula, where they hopefully find food and fresh water. And us, the birders who travel here from March to May to worship the birds as they seek to survive.

Persistence Pays Off For Burrowing Owls

For these reasons alone, after this successful nesting, we wanted to expand the number of artificial burrows available to the owls for the 2016 nesting season. This property is also a site with vernal pools and uses cattle grazing for vegetation control. The other two tunnels dead end inside the nesting chamber.
