Then I found out that there was this vocalization called a ‘call,’ so I thought each bird species had its own individual song (but just the males) and individual call. In 2015, a group submitted a petition to FWS to delist the warbler , relying on a study conducted by Texas A&M University that reported a far larger population and much more appropriate habitat than prior studies. Most serious bird photographers dislike taking pictures of birds wearing rings (or what on the other side of the Atlantic you call bands). I can sympathise, as a shiny new ring, clamped to a bird’s leg, rarely enhances its portrait. The information I received didn’t indicate the age of the bird.

I first met Robert Gallardo in 2009, when I made my first visit to the Neotropics for the Mesoamerican Bird Festival in Honduras. He has recorded over 20 new bird records for Honduras, dozens of new butterflies, new orchid records and even new species for science. We have done some bush-walking this week around Broome as the weather permits, but still no luck with finding any Snipe species for the 2017 list ! There are actually a lot less waterbirds than you might expect at some lagoons, but there is just so much water about the birds are spoiled for choice. Two Jack Snipe at roost.

One of my early memories of birds is the abundance of Ospreys I saw after moving from Syracuse, New York downstate to eastern Long Island at the age of eight. Ospreys nesting on platforms like this one in Fort Ticonderoga, New York make easy targets for even the most modestly-skilled bird photographers (this author included).

Way back on 16 May I managed to see my 312 bird species in Queens to add to my Queens list. Whimbrel – Undoubtedly this is the easiest bird left for me to find in Queens. Sedge Wren – This is a bird that rarely shows up on the coast in fall migration. Sooty Shearwater – This will take some more dedicated seawatching.

On our recent trip across the north of Australia we were lucky enough to encounter several Sarus Cranes- Grus antigone , which are incredibly tall and elegant birds. Standing at over 150cm the Sarus Cranes are an impressive bird and the wingspan is upwards of 250cm and is the tallest flying bird in the world.

Our plan was to head north for a few days and observe the concentrated bird-life around the remaining ephemeral lakes and observe some of the birds that had arrived in the north of Australia over the past few weeks. We don’t “twitch” birds, but it would be a bird to look out for during our visit.

I would do a lap of the lake and take in all of the different species of birds that called the city home. – we encountered a different variety of birds. The two most prolific contributors, Pat and Tom, have been sharing their birding space in Costa Rica. The beats have now contributed more checklists than birds. During October, 7 countries (Costa Rica, Australia, USA, India, Hong Kong, UK, Serbia) were birded by 11 beats who shared 135 checklists and noted 697 species.
